How do you coach leadership skills?
Soft skills such as empathy, communication, adaptability and creativity are increasingly cited as the top desired skills (eLearning Industry 2018, CNBC 2020, Forbes 2020). Google even found that among the eight qualities their top employees have in common, hard skills such as coding, were ranked last. Coaching was also among the top skills.
Coaching is the most effective way to equip management with the soft skills necessary for this new way of working (Harvard Business Review, 2019, PwC (2017). And as more and more companies embrace a more flexible approach to working from home, coaching must too be location-independent. Therefore a digital offering for leadership development, like CoachHub, is the solution.
What are the main coaching styles?
A systemic style is where the coachee, rather than the leadership coach, is the one in the coaching relationship that determines the topics of discussion, and the overall goals of the coaching program. Kaltenecker and Myllerup (2011) state “The overall mindset is to acknowledge that the person or team in question already has the potential abilities required for reaching the given goals, and the assignment for the coach is to help unlock this hidden potential.”
Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) coaching
NLP focuses on what works for the coachee rather than the theory behind it. It suggests that there is a connection between neurological processes, language and behavioural patterns, learned through experience, and that these processes changed to achieve specific goals in life.
Cognitive Behavioural Coaching
In cognitive behavioural coaching, the coach helps the coachee gain a perspective about whatever is at the root of the coachee’s difficulty. NLP coaching enables those restricted by emotional or psychological barriers to reach their goals.
What are some leadership coaching styles?
In transformational leadership, the leadership coach works with the coachee on changing the way they see themselves, rather than changing the way they act. CoachHub encourages transformational leadership, which focuses on the positive development (transformation) of followers. Transformational leadership has been more sustainable and successful in achieving goals than other leadership styles. The approach also promotes satisfaction, engagement, and creativity in followers and encourages their performance (O’Connor & Cavanaugh, 2013).
Vision coaching is where the leadership coach empowers coachees by giving them clear direction and tools for achieving their goals. The leadership coach will help the coachee develop and implement a vision plan that will give them or their clear direction. This style is is usually intensive and short term.
Autocratic coaching takes a telling approach rather than an asking approach. The dialogue between the leadership coach and coachee is less of an open dialogue, instead, it is instructional, with the executive coach being in control at all times, encouraging discipline and perfection.
